Pharmacy Fumbles
Peanut has been on Prevacid 15mg Solutabs for quite a while now. This medicine has really seemed to control her reflux and almost completely eliminated her choking spells. She started out taking half (7.5 mg) in the morning and half (7.5 mg) at night. At her check up the doctor said it was okay to start giving her the whole dose (15 mg) once a day, instead of splitting it up. I tried that for the first time yesterday and it seemed to work well. This morning Peanut woke up to eat at 6:00 am. Those of you who know me well know that I am NOT a morning person. I got her up, changed her, gave her the Prevacid and fed her. When I gave her the medicine, it looked a little bit bigger than I had remembered, but I was use to giving her just a half. I also vaguely remember seeing 30 mg on the back and thinking, "I thought she took 15 mg" right after she finished swallowing it. She finished eating and I went back to sleep. When I woke up later, I checked into it a little more and found that yes, she was supposed to take 15 mg (as the prescription bottle showed), but the bottle was full of 30 mg tabs. I called the pharmacist who couldn't find much information on it and gave me the number for poison control. A guy there answered the phone and didn't seem to have looked it up or anything. He told me she may have a headache and to call her pediatrician. I called the pediatrician and they had just turned off the phones for lunch. They wouldn't be back for an hour. I called the on-call and they took a message for the nurse to call me. I wasn't completely comfortable waiting another hour to see if my 3 month old was going to OD and if there was anything I could do to help her. I called my sister in law, Lisa, who is a nurse and she said to call back to the pediatrician and tell them I need to talk to someone now. I called the answering service back and the lady tells me, "yes, I have a message for them that you need a refill on the Prevacid". Really? I know that the phone I was on didn't have the greatest reception, but come on. Do you think I was calling during lunch, to the answering service to get a refill? And what in the world did you think the whole conversation about "poison control told me to call the doctor" had to do with a refill? Come on, people. Once I got her to understand what I was saying, she paged the doctor. Our pediatrician called me back and told me she should be fine. After getting off the phone, I noticed that Peanut had vomited most of the medicine in her bed. Either that or she found some purple glitter to sleep with. I am so glad that this medicine wasn't one that seriously hurt her. I know pharmacies are busy, but you would think they would double check, especially on a newborns prescription.

Becky, have you heard of infantreflux.org? They have a forum for parents of refluxers. I've been helped by those wonderful parents so many times!!
Just so you know, according to Dr. Phillips, a leader in treating reflux in infants, babies and children can tolerate very high doses of PPIs.
I hope she outgrows the reflux soon!!!
