Party in the Backseat!!!
The kids did GREAT. Considering we were in the car for over 16 hours, they did AWESOME. Leah colored, played games and watched movies with the kids. We only had to stop once, unscheduled, for bathroom breaks. I nursed Kate in the back and she quickly caught on that if she appeared "hungry", she would get to break out of the carseat for a few minutes. At one point she nursed, sucking only every 4 or 5 seconds, "milking" it for all it was worth. There was very little fussing and hardly any fighting. At one point, Daddy-O and I were in a heated conversation over relationships after reading The Shack. I turned around after a good hour of debate and all 4 kids were ALL eyes. They were dead quiet and thought we were fighting. We had to explain that we were just talking and really weren't fighting. Sarah admitted she was on the verge of asking to switch cars. OOPS!!!!
Around 7:45 pm, we stopped at a little IHOP for dinner and the mood was tense. Everyone was hungry, tired and ready to be out of the car. The restaurant was very small and didn't have a good layout for highchairs, let alone large groups. The sixteen of us, just about did it in. Leah was whinny and having trouble, Kate was grabbing at everything including hot coffee on our table and I was cranky. By the time dinner was over the mood was more than tense. As we went back to our assigned cars, Leah looked up at me and told me, "I know you don't want to hear this, but I don't think you are the best mommy for me". I think God knew I need something to "laugh" about, but I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. It did hurt my feelings, but after such a long day the feeling was almost mutual.
We finally stopped at an EconoLodge in Tuscaloosa, AL, after searching around for a hotel with 5 available, non-smoking rooms, around 11:30 pm. We unloaded the trailer and crashed. Kate had a little trouble going to sleep. She was SO happy to be out of her carseat.
Sunday we ate breakfast and headed out again. Christa and Ruthie rode with us, but I didn't take any pictures all day. We made it to the cabin at about 5:00 pm. We lost an hour for daylight savings and another hour for the time zone change. Bad week to travel.
The cabin is pretty nice. It is three story, with 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a game room, a theater, a living room and a hot tub. All three levels have wrap around porches and a decent view of the surrounding mountains. We unloaded everything, got settled in and Mom made some yummy chicken spaghetti for dinner. The rest of the night was spent playing and swimming.
